Medium Term Accommodation

Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) at Overcoming

At Overcoming, we understand that securing a long-term home takes time. That’s why we provide Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) to bridge the gap, ensuring you have a safe and comfortable place to stay while waiting for your permanent living arrangement.

What is Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)?

MTA is a type of temporary housing funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for up to 90 days. It is designed to support participants who are transitioning between accommodations due to disability-related needs.

MTA covers the cost of the accommodation itself, but it does not include daily living expenses like food, internet, electricity, or personal support services, which are funded separately.

Who is Eligible for MTA?

You may be eligible for MTA funding if you:

  • Have a long-term home confirmed but cannot move in yet due to delayed disability supports (e.g., awaiting home modifications or SIL/SDA availability).
  • Cannot stay in your current accommodation while waiting for your permanent home.

If you meet these criteria, MTA may be included in your NDIS plan as part of your overall home and living support needs.

When Would You Need MTA?

You might require Medium Term Accommodation if:

  • You are waiting for home modifications to be completed.
  • You have secured an SDA property, SIL home, or private rental, but it’s not yet available.
  • You are being discharged from hospital or the justice system and need temporary housing while awaiting long-term support.

Providing Evidence for MTA Approval

The NDIA requires evidence of your long-term housing arrangement before approving MTA funding. This may include:

  • A tenancy agreement (SDA or private rental).
  • A letter from a service provider confirming accommodation and support.
  • Documentation of approved home modifications with expected completion dates.
  • A copy of your mortgage confirming ownership of your future home.

MTA for Hospital and Justice System Discharges

Special considerations apply if you are being discharged from hospital or the justice system:

  • Hospital Discharge: If you qualify for SDA, SIL, ILO, or Home Modifications, you can access MTA funding without a confirmed long-term home.
  • Justice System Release: If you are eligible for SDA and awaiting parole or community support, MTA funding may be approved without long-term housing evidence.

What If You’re Not Eligible for MTA?

If you don’t meet MTA criteria, other home and living supports may be available through the NDIS, mainstream services, or community programs. Speak with your Support Coordinator, Local Area Coordinator (LAC), or NDIS planner for alternative solutions.
